WHY
By the time foster children age out of the system, most will have experienced five or more school changes and home changes, which means there may not be any stability in the friendships that they create. Pen a Friend, Inc.’s vision is to create a world where every foster child has a friend always.

my story
Every holiday season, with my family, I spend time volunteering at various nonprofit organizations in the service of others. I was in middle school when I first realized how much devoting my time to others made a difference in their lives. I knew I wanted to be involved in programs that changed the lives of people. I wanted to start something where I could do the same. After brainstorming with advisors and researching many different ideas, I found a need for a pen pal program. I found a few organizations that provided pen pal programs, and some programs that dealt with the needs of foster youth. However, I could not find any organizations that provided this unique pen pal program specifically for foster youth. I found a need for friendship for foster youth. A need that every child knows that they matter. A need that every child deserves a good friend and deserves a chance to be a good friend to another.
